Ordering Outlast Fabric? Check the Fiber Content First—A Buyer's $4,200 Lesson

Outlast fabric is legit when it comes to temperature regulation. But the brand name isn't what makes it work—the fiber composition is. And I didn't check ours closely enough until it cost us $4,200 in one failed production run.

So here's what you need to know if you're ordering Outlast fabric, or any performance textile: a 37% viscose blend and a 92/8 cotton-spandex blend are not the same product, even when both carry the Outlast label. The certification covers the temperature-regulating technology. It doesn't cover the base fabric underneath it.

Why I'm not just another voice on the internet

I'm an office administrator for a 120-person manufacturing company. I manage all fabric and material ordering—roughly $300,000 annually across 8 vendors. I report to both operations and finance, which basically means I get the blame when anything goes sideways.

I've been buying industrial fabric for 5 years now. Processing 60–80 orders a year changes how you look at "good deals." I've also been the person explaining to my VP why a production run had to be redone. Once was enough.

What material is viscose, actually?

Viscose is a semi-synthetic fiber made from wood pulp that goes through chemical processing. It's soft, it drapes nicely, and it's cheap. Those three qualities are exactly why fabric suppliers love putting it into blends.

The catch: viscose doesn't hold up like cotton does. Repeated washing can shrink it, stretch it, or make it lose shape. In a performance fabric—where the temperature-regulating tech depends on consistent fabric structure—viscose can undermine the whole product. I don't use "undermine" lightly. I use it because I watched it happen.

To be fair, viscose isn't always bad. Viscose-linen blends have a great drape, and for certain apparel applications it's a sensible choice. But you need to know it's in there. And here's the problem: you won't always know from the product title.

How do you find out? Asking for the "fiber content" line isn't enough. There's a difference between "cotton, viscose" and "63% cotton, 37% viscose." One tells you what to expect. The other tells you what's actually in the roll. If a supplier won't send the full spec sheet, that tells you something too.

The $4,200 lesson

Everything I'd read about performance fabrics said premium blends justify their cost. In practice, our specific use case taught me something different.

Last year I found a deal on Outlast-certified fabric. About 18% cheaper per yard than our usual supplier. The listing said "Outlast performance knit." Sounded like the same thing we'd been ordering for two years.

I skipped the full spec check. I figured, Outlast is Outlast, right?

Wrong.

The fabric came in and looked fine. After the first production wash, it didn't. The garments came out limp. Our quality manager flagged it before shipping, which saved us from a customer-facing disaster—but we still had to redo the entire run.

Everyone tells you to verify fiber content percentages before ordering. I only believed that advice after ignoring it and paying for the result.

The "performance knit" we bought had 37% viscose in the base. The lower price made sense: cheaper materials. We saved maybe $600 on the initial buy, then spent $4,200 fixing what came out of the wash.

Now I get the fiber breakdown in writing. Every single order.

What I check before any bulk order now

This is my standard checklist. It takes about 10 extra minutes per order, and it has saved us far more than the $4,200 it took me to learn it.

1. Full fiber breakdown, in writing

Not "performance knit." Not "premium blend." Exact percentages on the spec sheet. If a supplier won't provide that, I walk. Three years ago I would've called that paranoid. Now I call it Tuesday.

2. Free swatches, every time

Most fabric suppliers—Outlast included—offer free samples. Order them. Wash them the way your production line does. Then decide.

This caught a bad lot for us last spring. I knew I should order pre-production samples but thought, "we've used Outlast for years, what could change?" Well, their viscose base supplier changed. The hand-feel was off, and performance suffered. My foreman caught it in the swatch test before it hit the production line.

So glad I got those samples when I did. I almost skipped them to keep the schedule moving, which would have meant another failed run.

3. Fiber availability, checked by address

This one sounds more technical than it is. You can spec almost any fabric online, but "fiber availability by address" is a real logistics question. When I put our plant's address into a supplier's system, I'm checking two things: does this material actually ship to our region, and what's the real lead time?

Some performance fabrics have limited distribution. I've had a supplier quote 3-day delivery on a specialty fabric that actually shipped from a warehouse over 2,000 miles away. Checking availability by address upfront would have saved us a week of schedule panic.

Don't hold me to this, but I'd guess that at least 30% of the lead-time surprises I've seen could've been caught by checking availability before ordering. Roughly speaking.

4. What Kevlar gloves taught me about spec sheets

This example is from outside the fabric world, but it fits perfectly. We buy cut-resistant Kevlar gloves for our crew in Youngstown. "Kevlar glove" can mean anything from light-duty to ANSI cut level 5. The spec sheet is what separates them.

Same with Outlast fabric. The label tells you the technology is present. The spec sheet tells you what you're actually paying for.

When you can skip some of this

Honestly, if you're ordering under 50 yards for samples or mock-ups, don't overthink it. The stakes are low enough that you can move fast and learn by doing.

And I'm not 100% sure every supplier hides viscose in their blends. But I've seen enough examples to check, and check again. It's boring work. It feels like wasted time. Until it isn't.

There's also an efficiency angle here. When we switched to digital spec sheets and online sample requests, our average order processing time dropped from about 4 hours to 90 minutes. That's not just cost savings—it's freeing up my team to catch problems before they become $4,200 mistakes. The suppliers who make spec sheets easy to download and verify are the ones I keep reordering from.

One last thing about "Outlast" searches

If you searched "outlast free" or "outlast trials female big grunt" and landed here: you're probably looking for the video game, not the fabric. This article won't help you there. I've made that same mistake in reverse, so no judgment.

For the fabric buyers still reading: check the fiber list. Check it twice. The brand name gets you partway. The spec sheet gets you the rest of the way.
