Outlast Bedding Fabric: A Buyer’s Guide for Three Different Scenarios

There’s a search phrase that shows up in our site analytics almost every month: “how much fiber is in bananas.” For my first year in the textile trade, I assumed it was irrelevant—a lost nutrition query that Google had dropped on the wrong site. It took me about thirty customer conversations, and one particularly awkward phone call, to understand what was actually going on.

Fiber is one of those words that means one thing in food and another in fabric. On a nutrition label, fiber is the indigestible plant matter you eat. On a material spec, fiber content tells you what the yarn is made of—cotton, polyester, linen, wool, or a blend. When one word lives in two unrelated industries, buyers end up asking for “fiber content” as if it had a universal answer. It doesn’t. Choosing a bedding fabric doesn’t have a universal answer either.

I should state my bias up front. I’m not a chemist or a textile engineer. I’m the person who has handled bedding and home textile fabric orders at Outlast for six years, and I’ve personally made—and documented—three significant mistakes totaling roughly $11,300 in wasted material, reprocessing, and rushed shipping. Now I maintain the pre-order checklist our team uses. This article is that checklist, written for people who don’t work in my department.

The lesson those mistakes taught me is that fabric selection is a branching problem, not a formula. There is no single best Outlast bedding fabric; there are better choices for specific end uses. In my experience, nearly every home textile order falls into one of three scenarios. Find yours and follow that path.

Scenario 1: You’re Sourcing Kids’ Bedding

If you’re a manufacturer whose customer compares you to retail names like West Elm kids bedding, the real requirement isn’t just softness—it’s surviving a childhood. Kids’ bedding gets washed constantly, dragged across floors, and used for things no adult bedding should endure. That demands abrasion resistance and dimensional stability.

This is where my career almost started with a disaster. In my first year, a client asked me to match the hand feel of a premium kids’ line. I chose a low-twist pure cotton sateen for a 1,200-piece duvet cover order; it felt exactly as soft as the reference. The mill’s sample looked perfect, so I skipped the wash test to hit the timeline. After ten commercial washes, the covers had bagged, the seams had crawled, and the surface was pilling. The fabric didn’t fail because it was cheap—it failed because I evaluated softness and never checked durability.

The fix is not automatically a high-tech fabric. For most kids’ bedding, a tighter-spun cotton or a 60/40 cotton-polyester blend will outlast a supple pure cotton at a similar price. But don’t take my word—wash-test a production representative sample. Run ten wash/dry cycles at the temperature your customer will use, measure length and width after every cycle, and ask the mill for abrasion data using a recognized method (for example, ISO 12947). If the supplier says that’s unreasonable, that tells you what you need to know.

Scenario 2: You’re Sourcing a Metallic Duvet Cover

A “metallic duvet cover” is not one product. It can be a foil-coated fabric, a metal-laminated film, a woven fabric with metallic thread, or a pigment print with a shimmer finish. These look similar on a screen and behave very differently in a washing machine.

In October 2021, I approved 46 metallic duvet covers for a hotel project—342 metres of foil-coated fabric with a brushed cotton back. The mill’s sales rep called the finish “durable.” I didn’t ask the next question: durable to what? The first commercial wash cracked the foil along every fold line. The approved sample had never been laundered, and it cost us $3,200 in material plus a one-week delay. I still wince when I see foil-coated fabric in a bedding catalog.

Here’s the guidance I now give every buyer: if a metallic duvet cover will be washed commercially, avoid foil and laminated metallic surfaces entirely. Choose a woven metallic yarn—usually a wrapped metallic thread—or a pigment metallic with confirmed wash fastness. And never approve a metallic finish from a photo alone. Shimmer hides surface defects, and a phone camera flattens both. Send a physical swatch; if it’s under one ounce, USPS First-Class large envelope postage was $1.50 as of January 2025 (usps.com). The cost of a stamp is not worth repeating a $3,200 mistake.

Scenario 3: You’re Searching “Secret Outlast Solid” or “Crest Outlast”

Every month our search console includes phrases like “Secret Outlast Solid” and “Crest Outlast.” Neither of these is a current Outlast fabric style in our catalog. We’ve learned, after many confused calls, that they are usually color or finish references from other product categories that happen to share the name outlast. The right response is not to guess what they mean.

I learned that the hard way in Q1 2024. A customer asked us to match a solid called “Crest Outlast” on a new bedding program. Nobody asked for the physical reference; we assumed it was close to one of our greiges, ran the production, and the customer rejected the entire order. We were matching a phrase, not a color. A chip or a Pantone code would have taken two minutes to request.

So, if you came here with a similar phrase: please send the actual sample of what you’re matching—a fabric swatch, a paint chip, a Munsell number. And if what you’re looking for is simply a durable solid for basic bedding, don’t over-complicate the order. This is the counterintuitive part: not every basic solid needs performance-fabric technology. A mid-weight cotton/poly twill with a tight weave, consistent dye lot, and proper finishing can outlast a more expensive “technical” textile for a plain use case. Buy the technology only when the end product needs it. That single habit has saved our customers more money than any contract negotiation I’ve run.

How to Tell Which Scenario You’re In

Use this order, not a search result. First ask: who will wash this and how? If the answer is “a child’s parent” or “a hotel laundry,” start with scenario one. Second, does the order contain the word “metallic” or “shimmer”? Then start with scenario two; appearance is the primary risk. Third, if no performance requirement exists and you’re looking for a solid, durable color or brand code, start with scenario three.

And if the phrase that brought you here is “how much fiber is in bananas,” I won’t leave you hanging: the USDA FoodData Central lists roughly 2 to 3 grams of fiber for a medium banana, depending on size and ripeness. But the reason you landed on a textile article is probably not the fruit. It’s the same word “fiber,” used by two different industries, with two different definitions. Whenever you compare fiber content—banana or bedding—make sure you’re using the same definition, the same test method, and the same stage of the product lifecycle. Otherwise you’ll keep searching for an answer that doesn’t exist.

The Last Check: Your Label Is Part of the Product

Before you finalize any fabric, decide what you will claim about it. If your label says “durable,” “cooling,” “recyclable,” or “eco-friendly,” those are not decorative adjectives. Per FTC business guidance (ftc.gov), advertising claims must be truthful, not misleading, and substantiated before you make them. The FTC Green Guides, for example, say that an unqualified “recyclable” claim is only appropriate where recycling facilities are available to a substantial majority (at least 60%) of consumers. A handwave is not evidence.

At Outlast, we avoid words like “indestructible” and “completely eco-friendly” without certification. Ask your mill for test reports and, where relevant, certification references before you print a claim. If they cannot show you data, treat the term as an opinion.

That’s the checklist I wish someone had handed me before my first kids’ bedding order. It won’t remove every risk from buying performance textiles, but it will help you spend less time searching for a universal answer and more time choosing the right fabric for your actual product.
