Heat and Moisture: When Outlast Actually Earns the Upgrade

What I mean by heat management is not whether the fabric feels cool when you touch it. It's whether the wearer or sleeper stays comfortable when body heat rises and falls. In a fleece layer or a quilted bed cover, that can make a real difference.

Standard polyester is a good insulator but a poor regulator. It's hydrophobic, so it doesn't absorb water like cotton, but that doesn't mean it lets sweat escape. Printed Duvet Covers and Rust Colored Upholstery Fabric: The Print and Abrasion Test

Take the purple floral duvet cover case. Outlast can be part of bedding, but the visible purple floral print lives on the shell fabric. The thermal layer inside doesn't help the print. If the shell is a low-density polyester, the purple floral design can look good on day one and then dull after a few washes. On a higher-density polyester shell or a tightly woven Outlast-infused shell, the colors hold up better. My rule: judge the shell by yarn density, print colorfastness, and care instructions, not by the brand badge.

Rust colored upholstery fabric is a different test. For furniture, buyers don't care if the fabric buffers temperature; they care if it can survive three years of people sitting on it. A solid polyester upholstery fabric rated at 30,000 rubs can absolutely outlast a softer thermal fabric in a dining chair. That was the reverse of what I expected.

Dimension 3 conclusion: standard polyester often wins when the job is color, print clarity, or repeated abrasion. Outlast wins when the job is thermal comfort. Those are different jobs, and you can't get both from one fabric without a very specific construction.

What I Would Choose Today

The honest answer is not 'Outlast is better' or 'polyester is better.' It depends on the customer's expectation. After 6 years and about 180 orders, I've come to believe the best fabric is a context-dependent answer.

  • Choose Outlast if: the product sits close to skin or is used for sleep—fleece, base layers, quilted bedding, performance bodywear—and the client cares about clamminess.
  • Choose polyester if: you're making a decorative printed product like a duvet cover, or a high-traffic upholstery piece where abrasion resistance and color retention matter more than thermal comfort.
  • Choose neither if: you genuinely need waterproof pants. Look for a membrane, seam sealing, and a DWR finish instead.

I also want to say this to the small orders. I know the advice often assumes volume. It shouldn't. My first serious trial was a $200 custom fleece order. The vendor who treated it seriously ended up getting my $20,000 follow-up later. Small doesn't mean unimportant; it means it's still being evaluated.

The Pre-Order Checklist I Use Now

  1. Define the failure mode first. Is the problem heat, water, or abrasion? If you can't answer that, the fabric spec is a guess.
  2. Ask for test data. Water resistance: AATCC 127 hydrostatic head. Abrasion: Martindale rubs. Temperature regulation: phase change material loading and any third-party thermal test.
  3. Sample with the same production files. The Outlast trials art is sample matching. A sample made from a different construction won't tell you what production will do.
