Most fabric sourcing decisions are made on the wrong number. We focus on price per yard when the measure that matters is cost per product that actually survives production and use. And a fabric that holds its structure through cutting, sewing, shipping, and a few seasons of use is usually worth more than the quote sheet says. The Silk Road mattered because it forced merchants to solve the same problem we're solving now: how to evaluate a product you can't fully see. Silk from one region, cotton from another, dyes from another—all moved across thousands of miles. A buyer who chose only on price often found out why the price was low only after it was too late. That's why routes like the Silk Road depended on reputation, sample-based trade, and repeat relationships.
Some of that verification is now automated. The fundamentals haven't changed, though; the execution has just become faster. I'd argue the basic question is still the same: will this product outlast its intended purpose?
