I coordinate rush fabric orders for a supplier. Last quarter alone, we processed 47 rush orders and hit a 95% on-time rate. The missing 5%? Almost always the same root cause: the wrong fabric was specced near the deadline.
This article is a comparison, not a sales pitch. I’m putting Outlast performance fabrics up against commodity options—retro fleece, plain canvas, standard webbing—across the dimensions that matter when the clock is running. At the end, I’ll tell you which I’d choose for specific scenarios, and where I’d walk away from Outlast entirely.
Before we start: if you search “outlast survival” or “psychosis outlast trials” online, you’ll get a video game. That’s not what this guide is about. In textiles, “outlast survival” means something simpler—whether a fabric can survive production, shipping, wash cycles, returns, and a client who changes the spec at hour 30.

In 2020, a custom retro fleece jacket order usually started with a generic 14 oz. polyester fleece. It was cheap, it was fluffy, and it was hard to differentiate. By 2025, that old baseline has shifted. You can now get temperature-regulating Outlast technology in fleece, denim, linen, upholstery, and custom webbing.
The fundamentals haven’t changed. Fabric still has to sew well, ship on time, and survive its intended use. But the execution has transformed.

Dimension 1: Durability—Does It Make It Past the First Season?
Start with the product that probably brought you here: the retro fleece jacket. A standard fleece is comfortable until it pills, loses loft, and starts looking tired after eight washes. Outlast fleece behaves differently. The phase-change material (meaning the PCM embedded in the fibers) doesn’t wash off. The fabric also tends to hold its structure longer. But let me be clear: Outlast is not indestructible. It can snag. It can abrade against coarse zippers. It’s durable for a performance textile, not for a truck tarp.
Auburn canvas (that reddish-brown canvas you see on work aprons and totes) is a different story. If you’re making an auburn canvas tote, that fabric will outlast most fleece jackets. Canvas is rigid, abrasion-resistant, and gets better with age. But it won’t keep anyone warm.
The dimension conclusion: for apparel, Outlast fleece wins on long-term appearance and thermal performance. For bags and industrial products, canvas wins by a mile. You can’t rank them without knowing the end use.
Dimension 2: Turnaround—What Can You Actually Get Done in 36 Hours?
This is where the emergency specialist in me gets specific.
In March 2024, a client called at 9 a.m. needing 140 retro fleece jackets—no, 140, I’m mixing it up with the first quote; they originally asked for 120, then expanded two hours later. They were for a trade show that opened in 36 hours. Normal custom fleece lead time is three weeks. We found a facility with Outlast-certified inventory in the right color, paid $1,100 in rush fees on top of the $6,400 base cost, and delivered with 11 hours to spare. Their retailer had a $50,000 penalty clause. Missing that deadline would have ended their season.
Here’s the counterintuitive part: the Outlast-certified mill had finished goods ready to cut. When you’re triaging a rush order, a technical mill with certified inventory can be faster than a basic factory.

But take this with a grain of salt: I’ve also seen Outlast custom runs take five weeks because the mill’s cut schedule was full. The moral isn’t “Outlast is always faster.” It’s ask for proof of stock before you fall in love with a lead time.
Dimension 3: Shrinkage and Care—Does Rayon Shrink in the Dryer?
Yes. Rayon shrinks in a dryer. Usually 2-5%, but I’ve seen worse. That’s not just a laundry issue; it’s a production issue. If your supplier doesn’t account for residual shrinkage, the garment that fits in the sample can be too small after the customer washes it.
This relates to Outlast vs. fleece directly. One reason brands switch away from rayon or commodity knits to performance textiles is predictable care. Outlast fleece and performance fabrics are usually engineered synthetics with tight weaves, so shrinkage tends to be lower. But I still test every run. If you’re cutting a retro fleece jacket, the face and lining can shrink at different rates. If you’re sewing an auburn canvas bag, minimal shrinkage—but you need to test the webbing too.
Quick note on claims: if you put “pre-shrunk” or “environmentally-friendly” on a label, the FTC has rules about that. Per FTC Green Guides (ftc.gov), environmental claims need substantiation. I’m not a lawyer, but I’ve seen a client get a cease-and-desist over an unverified “eco fiber” claim.

Outlast allows brands to tell a story: “This jacket regulates temperature, so you don’t overheat in the car.” With standard fleece, the story is “this is cozy.” If you’re selling to retailers, the technical claim matters at the margin. Auburn canvas, on the other hand, thrives in custom webbing and accessories. You can pair it with contrast stitching, leather trims, woven labels. It’s a timeless, tactile look. Outlast can make a canvas tote too, but if you don’t need temperature regulation, you’re paying for a feature the end customer won’t notice.
The surprising conclusion from my experience: technical fabric mills are often easier to customize than commodity mills. They’re used to writing specifications, doing wash tests, and documenting everything. Basic fleece mills are not always set up for that. If your client needs Pantone-matched custom webbing and a detailed test report, a certified performance mill may be smoother than a generic fabric supplier.
So Which One Should You Order?
Here’s the practical part. The answer depends on the product and the price point.
- Retro fleece jacket, basic spec, tight budget: Use standard fleece. It’s cheaper and predictable. But build in a 48-hour production buffer.
- Premium jacket with performance claim: Use Outlast fleece. It justifies a higher price point and gives you a real feature to sell. The certification and testing overhead are worth it.
- Auburn canvas tote or duffel: Canvas with custom webbing. No need for Outlast unless the client specifically wants the performance story.
- Rayon dresses or linings: If you must use rayon, pre-shrink and test. No one should be asking “does rayon shrink in the dryer” after the fabric is already cut.
One more thing: the lead times and fees I mentioned are accurate as of July 2025. The fabric market changes fast, so verify current stock, certifications, and rates before you promise a date. Don’t hold me to the $1,100 rush fee—that was one specific case.
